Gambling and Alcohol

Easy one this and easy one to ignore.

Don’t bet when you are drunk!

I’m going to suggest that it is possible to have a drink and perform to an acceptable level. If you arrive at the stage where you think you know everything and that you are a god, then it’s time to find an alternative activity. The best one might be sleep.

When you wake up in the morning you might have been extremely lucky but, bearing in mind that you need to have your wits about you, the most likely outcome is that you’ll be asking yourself ‘what was I thinking? Or ‘How did I manage to lose so much?’

Sometimes I have a drink at home before dinner. Sometimes I have a couple of drinks before dinner. When I’ve had one drink, I hit the keyboard exactly as I want. More than one drink and I cannot be certain that I have done exactly what I meant to do.

It’s a lethal combination. My rule is that I am allowed one drink. Any more than that and I am not allowed to place a bet. That’s the rule. Have I ever broken it? Yes. Why? Because when you are drunk (or whatever your enjoyment is) you do not think clearly and rationally. So, I will tell myself that I am absolutely in control, in fact even think that I know better than everybody else. If things don’t go according to plan, then it’s not my fault but just the unlucky way things turned out.

People can justify many things when they are drunk. In the cold light of day things can look vastly different. It’s tough enough to make things pay in a sober world. Add in the alcohol scenario and whether you win or not, you have just turned the odds massively against yourself. Work hard to earn your money, work hard not to throw it away.
